Painting on the surface of small and large scale photographs, Berg blurs the line between realism and abstraction by covering and altering parts of the underlying photographic image. The results are both familiar and unsettling as the viewer attempts to reconcile the seemingly “real” space of the photo with the “artificial” space of actual paint on the surface.
Sonya Berg received her MFA from The University of Texas at Austin in 2010, and teaches at St. Edward’s University in Austin, TX. Her work has recently been exhibited at Red Arrow Contemporary in Dallas, Art Palace Gallery in Houston and Masur Museum of Art in Monroe, LA.
